Getting Microgeneration Schemes Through the Planning System
Submitted by admin on September 8, 2006 - 13:30. microgeneration | planning | renewable energy
The Government is pushing forward local renewable energy schemes with the launch of its first ever Microgeneration Strategy in March 2006 which received a £50 million boost in the Budget. The Government are now looking at how the planning system can be adapted to accommodate renewable energy as the present system means long delays and can make even small schemes prohibitively expensive.
This morning seminar, hosted by Bircham Dyson Bell, will present the findings of the DCLG review of the general permitted development order relating to the domestic installation of microgeneration. It will consider whether the proposals go far enough and what needs to change to enable renewable energy schemes to become widespread. The Government can have all the targets it likes but without changes to the planning system they will not be met.
The following issues will be discussed:
- The importance of small-scale local renewable energy schemes in tackling climate change and the energy shortage
- The DCLG proposals on permitted development: do they go far enough?
- What needs to be done to make it easier for developers to incorporate renewable energy into new developments?
- What problems do local authorities face with the current planning system?
- How much can local authorities and developers be expected to do?
- Expanding renewable energy beyond domestic use
- The future for renewable energy: Government targets and the role of local schemes
