The Government is pushing forward local renewable energy schemes with the launch of its first ever Microgeneration Strategy in March 2006 which received a £50 million boost in the Budget. The Government are now looking at how the planning system can be adapted to accommodate renewable energy as the present system means long delays and can make even small schemes prohibitively expensive.

This morning seminar, hosted by Bircham Dyson Bell, will present the findings of the DCLG review of the general permitted development order relating to the domestic installation of microgeneration. It will consider whether the proposals go far enough and what needs to change to enable renewable energy schemes to become widespread. The Government can have all the targets it likes but without changes to the planning system they will not be met.

The following issues will be discussed:

  • The importance of small-scale local renewable energy schemes in tackling climate change and the energy shortage
  • The DCLG proposals on permitted development: do they go far enough?
  • What needs to be done to make it easier for developers to incorporate renewable energy into new developments?
  • What problems do local authorities face with the current planning system?
  • How much can local authorities and developers be expected to do?
  • Expanding renewable energy beyond domestic use
  • The future for renewable energy: Government targets and the role of local schemes

The Town and Country Planning Association is committed to progressing sustainable communities and recognises that the Government’s Sustainable Communities Plan, represents an exciting opportunity to develop genuinely sustainable communities in the Growth and Pathfinder areas of England.

Having independently identified the areas of knowledge and expertise which need to be addressed, the TCPA has developed a high level training programme to be delivered through an intensive short course, over two days. Leading national experts from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences will give masterclasses offering case study examples and techniques to provide a set of tools to assist professionals working in delivery agencies, local authorities, development agencies and professional consultancies, as well as elected members, in the delivery of sustainable communities.

This TCPA course is supported by the Academy for Sustainable Communities and is endorsed by the Prince’s Foundation and the Audit Commission.

End: 2006-11-10 16:30

DATES: 9 and 10 November 2006                                       VENUE: Brighton Racecourse

The South East Renewable Energy Conference is a crucial step for the sustainable development of our region”, John Thorp, Director, ecsc.

Every year this major Conference drives renewable energy development in the region.  This year delegates will take away with them proven strategies to overcome the barriers and address four key issues that are crucial for us all to meet local and regional targets and to take advantage of the economic, social and environmental benefits and opportunities that renewable energy could bring to the South East region:

  1. Finance and Investment
  2. Community Engagement and Involvement
  3. Spatial Planning
  4. Technologies and Technical Issues

What we need to do, inspiring examples and solutions for how barriers can be overcome will be discussed by expert speakers and demonstrated through practical workshops .  The exhibition will display the latest technologies and will provide delegates with the opportunity to meet face-to-face with the manufacturers to learn about new developments and techniques.

Programme

The South East Renewables Conference 2006 will be held over two days and will consist of a mix of inspiring presentations and practical workshops.
